Social Media and Teen Mental Health Litigations

Personal Injury

There is a growing mental health crisis among teenagers and children that can be attributed to an alleged problematic use of Instagram or another social media platform. Personal injury claims are currently pending in MDL 3047 before Judge Gonzales Rogers in the Northern District of California and in California State Court Coordination JCCP 5255 pending before Judge Kuhl in Los Angeles County. The MDL is progressing through discovery and we are still reviewing personal injury cases for both the federal MDL and the JCCP. The first bellwether trial began in the JCCP on Jan. 26, 2026. Motley Rice member Previn Warren is co-lead in the MDL and attorney Annie Kouba leads our state court efforts on the PSC.

School Districts

In addition to individual clients, several school districts have joined the litigation. Plaintiff school districts, contend that the mental health crisis caused by these platforms has caused major disruptions in their schools and required the addition of extensive and expensive resources to combat this crisis. We believe the MDL can address the issues of the school districts, parents, students, and taxpayers. Attorney Jade Haileselassie leads the firm’s work on behalf of these public clients.

Toxic Weed Killers

Several toxic weed killers are associated with serious medical conditions. Including:

  • Paraquat, one of the most popular herbicides in the country. However, some farmers and agricultural workers believe the weedkiller caused them to develop Parkinson’s Disease. State bellwether trials are moving forward.
  • Roundup, which many allege caused their non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL).  A $7.25 billion proposed national class settlement agreement was announced on Feb. 17, 2026. It includes current and future claimants. Joe Rice serves as a proposed class counsel.

Ozempic® Mounjaro® Rybelsus® Saxenda® Trulicity® Wegovy® Zepbound®

Gastro injuries- MDL No. 3094

Ozempic / Wegovy and similar diabetic / weight loss management prescription medicines have grown in popularity as effective drugs. However, people who use them may risk health problems. Thousands of lawsuits have been filed in federal and state courts claiming extreme and unadvised side effects. Those with intestinal blockages, ileus, bowel obstruction, gastroparesis, and injuries requiring surgery have been consolidated in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and Motley Rice member Jonathan Orent serves as MDL co-lead.

Vision loss injuries- newly established MDL No. 3163

Multiple studies have shown a statistically significant link to nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropath (NAION)—a condition that can result in blindness from damage to the optic nerve. Additionally, a new study has emerged linking GLP-1s to an increase in risk for macular degeneration, specifically wet AMD. In February 2026, U.S. District Judge Karen Marston in Philadelphia named Motley Rice attorney Jonathan Orent co-lead counsel and Grace Chandler to the MDL Plaintiffs Executive Committee. The cases in this consolidation allege that manufacturers did not properly warn of the potential for NAION.

LDS Sexual Abuse Lawsuits

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), also known as the Mormon Church, faces allegations of decades-long child sexual abuse cover-ups. Plaintiffs claim the Church failed to prevent future abuse, and hundreds across the U.S. have filed lawsuits seeking justice for the trauma they endured. Toxic Hair Relaxer Litigation

We are reviewing potential claims related to hair relaxers and straighteners that contain formaldehyde and other Endocrine disrupting chemicals that are known to cause cancer in humans. Individuals diagnosed with uterine cancer, ovarian cancer or endometrial cancer after using a chemical hair relaxer or straightener product may be eligible. This litigation is being pursued as an MDL as well as in the state courts.

Federal MDL No. 3060

On February 6, 2023, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation consolidated cases before Honorable Mary M. Rowland in the Northern District of Illinois in MDL 3060, In re: Hair Relaxer Marketing Sales Practices And Products Liability Litigation. Fidelma Fitzpatrick serves as co-lead counsel and Tope Leyimu serves on the Plaintiffs' Steering Committee.

State Court

On June 17, 2025, Judge Joshua Roberts, who oversees the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Complex Litigation Center, appointed six attorneys, including Motley Rice member Mike Daly, as plaintiffs’ co-liaison counsel in Philadelphia’s hair relaxer mass tort program. 

Depo-Provera Birth Control Litigation

Studies have found that Depo-Provera®, a female contraceptive injection, may be linked to the development of meningioma, a tumor that arises from the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, after as few as two doses. Motley Rice attorney Carmen Scott serves on the Plaintiffs' Steering Committee for the Depo-Provera MDL.

SteriCare Solutions Recalls and Litigation

SteriCare Solutions is a saline and sterile water-based line of products used for the flushing and cleaning of wounds or medical tubing. In November 2023, Nurse Assist issued a voluntary recall indicating the packaging seal of the sterile products may be compromised. Additional recalls followed in early 2024 that captured product lines from healthcare distributors. The recalled products carry the risk of bacterial contamination that could lead to serious and potentially life-threatening infections of the bloodstream, urinary tract, open wound/soft tissue and respiratory system, among others. Pressure Cooker Recalls

On May 1, 2025 SharkNinja issued a global recall for its Ninja Foodi OP300 Series Multi-Function Pressure Cookers regarding an alleged defect that allowed the lid to open during cooking. More than 100 burn injuries were reported, with more than 50 being second and third degree burns to the face and body. There have been other brands recalled for a variety of reasons. PFAS Forever Chemicals

Water Contamination

PFAS chemicals environmental contamination has been identified as originating from military bases, manufacturers, wastewater treatment plants and other facilities leading to significant damages to property, natural resources, and the health of people exposed. Our attorneys are actively involved in numerous PFAS-related litigations, including Joe Rice serving as co-lead in the AFFF MDL.

Hamas Terrorist Attacks

On October 7, 2023, the Hamas terrorist organization waged the deadliest attack on Israel in its history, murdering over 1,200 men, women and children, injuring thousands, and taking over 200 civilians hostage. This marked the beginning of a continued campaign of terrorism including attacks throughout the region. People who were harmed in these various attacks may be able to file a lawsuit against Hamas and any other responsible foreign parties.

Oxbryta

Pfizer recently announced a global recall of Oxbryta® (voxelotor), a medication used for the treatment of sickle cell disease. Recent studies show that Oxbryta® may pose significantly increased risks of dangerous health complications that outweigh the benefits to patients, including vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs).

Air India Flight 171

On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight 171 crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport in Northwest India and impacting on the campus of Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Medical College and Civil Hospital, a few miles from the airport. More than 270 people were killed, including passengers and people on the ground.

AA Flight 5342 midair crash

On January 29, 2025, American Airlines Flight 5342 collided midair with an Army helicopter on January 29, 2025. 60 passengers and four crew members were on board the regional jet. The helicopter had three soldiers on board. Our aviation attorneys have litigated for victims of commercial plane disasters and military helicopter crashes.

Medical Devices

We litigate cases for people suffering serious complications, or sadly who lost their lives due to dangerous medical devices, including: 

  • Dexcom G6 is often praised for its convenience, some diabetics have called its safety into question, alleging faulty readings and failures to alert patients of impending severe low blood sugar. If the device fails, the outcome can be disastrous, including dangerously low blood sugar episodes leading to coma, seizure or even death.
  • Recalled Allergan Biocell® textured breast implants and breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) diagnosis
  • Complications from Paragard® IUD. Read more on the criteria for the severe injuries, which can occur from this birth control device
  • Hernia mesh revision and other complications from manufacturers including Atrium C-QUR™, C.R. Bard mesh that use Marlex polypropylene, Johnson & Johnson Ethicon Physiomesh® Flexible Composite and Composix® Kugel® Mesh patches
  • Implanted Cook Medical retrievable IVC Filters
  • Pelvic/transvaginal mesh/sling devices. While we’ve resolved cases for thousands of women injured by TVM devices, women will continue to be harmed over the life of the product. Where a woman suffers severe symptoms and has a revision or other surgical repair, she may have a new case
  • Complications from Medtronic Insulin Pumps, which may be subject to a recall and can cause over or under dosing to diabetes patients
  • Many patients have become seriously ill following a medical procedure involving an endoscope, the FDA reports that its complex design may impede effective reprocessing, or the cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing of these types of scopes

Occupational Disease & Worker Safety

Motley Rice represents workers and their families injured or killed by hazardous workplace exposures to toxic dusts, chemicals and defective equipment in litigation. We are reviewing cases involving:
